Our actions and the course of our lives can be impacted my many different types of influencers. If you google "types of influencers" you will actually see a list that ranges from celebrities, to bloggers, to employees, to macro and micro influencers. The shocking thing is that God is nowhere on that list. Now, I know that He isn't technically an influencer by today's definition, but shouldn't He actually be the goal for anyone trying to influence other's lives?
Matthew 1:18-19 ESV
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being just a man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
Times have changed. We hear that a lot but consider the stark difference we see in the world that Jesus was born in vs. the world we live in today. We have to pay close attention to the symbols that are in the Bible to help us understand what it is trying to teach us.
We inherit the name and the kingdom of God the father. One of the symbols you see in the Bible is the story of Mary. In the times of the Bible, when a woman married into a family, she inherited a right to that family. She would inherit land, wealth, and the name of the family that she had married into. This is a symbol of the inheritance we have from Jesus. It shows who we belong to.
Matthew 1:20-22 ESV
But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
The world today is full of people who are trying to influence us. Our thoughts, actions, identity, and our money are all being influenced by what we see and encounter in the world. Did you know that there is someone out there that earned a PHD by doing a dissertation on the Kardashians as “influencers”? What types of influencers do you think they are? What impact are they having on people? Do you think it is the same kind of influence that Jesus had on the world when he was here? If I had to guess, I would say it is probably far from the kind of influence Jesus should still have in this world.
Sometimes the church becomes too worldly, and the world becomes too churchly, and we can’t tell the difference. We can’t discern what God wants us to do because we are so focused on what we see and hear in the world. We are letting the wrong things influence us. We are looking to people, not God. We are asking for the opinions of the wrong people. It shouldn't matter what the Kardashians or the others on Instagram say, we need to be seeking out Jesus and His influence on our lives.
Think this gets difficult because there are so many things that just don't make sense to us. There are things about God and His plan that we just can't make sense of, and as humans that is terrifying to us. In reality, when things stop making sense to man, that is the time where it is most important to trust God. God has a plan for our lives that is much bigger and much better than anything we could ever imagine. We see this in the Bible. Take Joseph for example. He was marrying a virgin who was having a baby. There was probably a lot of speculation and embarrassment around this situation for him, and if he had listened to the world, he would have divorced Mary.
Can you imagine if he decided not to trust God?? He decided to trust God even though his circumstances didn’t make sense yo him or to anyone else around him. Joseph actually asked God for direction and was able to follow those directions and witness the most miraculous thing of all time. The birth of our Lord and savior.
We all make New Year's resolutions when January rolls around. We decide that we want to eat healthier, workout more, save more money, etc. How many of your resolutions usually include God? This world would be a different place if we let God be our influence instead of the other types of influencers we see in our day to day lives. It's important to remember that you have to have God in your heart in order to be able to let Him influence you. You have to be able to carefully listen for His discernment for what is right and wrong instead of relying on what you see in the world. If you have never accepted God into your life and have questions on how to do so, please reach out to us. We would love nothing more than to help you accept God into your life! Talk about a New Year's resolution!!!
